Allen County Folklife and Oral History Project
Allen County, Kentucky

Folk studies graduate students at Western Kentucky University are given the opportunity to take part in this project under the project director, Dr. Erika Brady.  The goal of this project is to compile an extensive body of information about Allen County, Kentucky and the life and arts and crafts of its residents.

My Part:

While working with this ethnographic project, I chose to pursue the art and craft of quilting by looking at one quilter and her quilting shop in downtown Scottsville, Kentucky.

My work included:

  • semi-structured archive-quality recorded audio interviews using professional recording equipment

  • professional standard archived materials including fully transcribed interviews, field notes and jottings, paperwork and donation forms, and photography

Allen County Log Structure Survey
Allen County, Kentucky

This project also fell under the Allen County Folklife and Oral History Project, but was focused specifically on log structures in the county.  Under the supervision and direction of Dr. Michael Ann Williams, undergraduate and graduate students were assigned groups with which they were tasked with surveying specific quadrangles of land in Allen County in order to document previously recorded log structures as well as any new ones in the area.  This data was given back to the residents of Allen County, as well as the Kentucky Heritage Council to update their historic sites inventory.

My Part:
  • I served as leader for the group that I was assigned to work with

  • I helped to conduct systematic survey of historic log structures in Allen County

  • I prepared Kentucky Historic Sites Inventory forms (Form KHC 2012-1)

  • Photography

  • I prepared a group report and presentation of findings and delivered the presentation of our findings

Oral History Radio Programming Project

This project was focused on the lesser-known folklore of Kentucky.  Under the supervision and direction of Dr. Michael Ann Williams, undergraduate and graduate students were selected archival sources dealing with subjects of their choice.  They were tasked with creating a short radio-quality piece to highlight their subject.  The radio piece was required to use archival sources.

My Part:
  • I examined archives for quality audio sound clips from interviews related to my topic of choice:  mineral spring hotels

  • I wrote a full script for the radio piece

  • I added proper sound clips from the archival interview as a form of an exhibition of the subject
